“WORLD AS A WAITING ROOM”

2020

I DON'T UNDERSTAND ROCK AND ROLL - An album planned for release in 30 days during lockdown in the band's hometown of Austin, Texas.  The album was completed in a week and kicks off with this fast paced, late 70s, early 80s New Wave Rock track.  Its catchy rhythm and chorus is similar to that of The Cars.  Great start.  Vocalist James Petralli sings "So your summer came early,
all the streets are empty" summing up the world's predicament.

MATTER OF MATTER - This track is a mix of everything, there are nods to 90s Brit Pop, early 70s Classic Rock and New Wave.  Another uptempo number which sounds like an experimental jam but it works! Cool song.

WORK - A rooster call introduces this track, probably the wake up call for work.  It is just over 6 minutes and is an epic Punk Rock style reminding me of Iggy Pop and the Stooges.  Its got a great groove, toe tappingly delightful.  The tempo is similar to Iggy's "Real Wild One" and others of his catalogue.  Relentless and absorbing and totally enjoyable.

GO NUMB - This is why I love this band, you never know what is coming next.  This is Classic Rock merging with some Glam style.  Has a little David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Elvis Costello vibe in the vocals.  There is a a lovely melody going through in the background, a gem.

QUEEN OF THE QUARANTINE - This is a kind of stripped back experimental ballad, again the influence of maybe Marc Bolan and David Bowie here. Its gentle and surreal rhythm backing and Psychedelic effects make this very unusual, eerie, mystical and engaging.  Covid-19 lyrics are sung, "And doin’ my best to maintain my healthy distance, but I’m keepin’ her close". It has got a "jolly ditty" feel to it but the desperation and disbelief is there.

DVD - Another fast 90s Brit Pop styled track akin to Supergrass and the like, with hints of Punk and Glam Rock.  There are also leanings to 60s Pop Rock similar to The Monkees when they branched out from their TV persona's into a bonafide band..

SLOW DEATH - Pure Glam Rock with the usual suspects coming to mind such as The Sweet and T-Rex.  It has a quirky charm and takes you back to the early to mid 70s with a fond nostalgia.

EAGLE WINGS - Rock N' Roll meets Punk in a kind of Rockabilly style.  Love this, upbeat and fun.

KING PROSPERO - The most outright Pop Rock track on the album.  This is beautifully sung by James and is a really laid back, sweet New Wave ballad with delightful melodies.  Great end to a great album.  Hard to believe this band have been going so long and I only picked up on them a couple of years ago.  Talented and no fear to experiment or break genre moulds.  This band is no one trick pony that's for sure!
