TYRANNOSAURUS REX   "MY PEOPLE WERE FAIR AND HAD SKY IN THEIR HAIR...BUT NOW THEY'RE CONTENT TO WEAR STARS ON THEIR BROWS" 1968 HOT ROD MAMA - The debut album by the band (later to be named just T-Rex) was performed by Marc Bolan and Steve Peregrine Took.  This opening track is a smooth, uptempo Blues Rock Folk with a blistering pace.  A great opening number.   SCENESCOF - This is a really nice Eastern sounding ballad with its slow drawn out vocals backed by a suprisingly quicker music.  Chilled. CHILD STAR - An eerie sounding mix of 60s Psychedelic Rock and mystical Folk. Experimentally cool. STRANGE ORCHESTRA - A quirky, fun Folk Pop track reminding me a little of The Monkees. Lots od "doo doo" vocals and it rocks along merrily.  It sounds like Marc and Steve had a little merriment here.   CHATEAU IN VIRGINIA WATERS - A light Blues Rock track which is similar to certain tracks by The Kinks.  Typical 60s casual Rock Pop. DAWRFISH TRUMPET BLUES - Cool ex

ANNA MELINE - "I COULDN'T STAY" 2015

Image
ANNA MELINE "I COULDN'T STAY" 2015 I COULDN'T STAY - This debut album by Swedish singer-songwriter Anna Meline is a mixed bag of a few genres showing this young lady's raw creative talent.  This is where it began before the latest accomplished music of songs like "Pictures And Words" in 2019.  The opening title track is a pumping Electronic Europop track backing up Anna's anguished Rock like vocal. WHAT FOR - Track 2 is a beautiful, emotional Pop ballad.  Big vocals front a powerful melancholic melody.  Simply great Pop, a little Abba, a little Roxette and a little Berlin.  Nice. STANDING - This is a kind of New Wave Rock Pop track, similar in vein to early The Cars tracks.  Electronic but also with a rocky beat. Its another cool track for Miss Meline.     THERE FOR YOU - This is pure 80s Synth Pop, reminds me of early Erasure.  It is simple but catchy and yet another genre for Anna to experiment with.  This set is a brave debut for a fresh new ta

KEVIN NOLAN - "LET'S ALL GET NERVOUS" 2020

Image
KEVIN NOLAN "LET'S ALL GET NERVOUS" 2020 THE DEAD-BEAT - An eerie, atmospheric, effects laden opener to the album.  A basic robotic style intro picks up pace behind a spoken narrative.  Elements of Iggy Pop, Tom Waits and Kraftwerk with a little Gothic Rock influence make this sparkle.  At the 3 minute mark the tempo and depth increases with a funky upbeat segement with reverb echoed effects to the end.  Hard to define a genre when it incorporates so many in one song! Interesting experimental start to the Irish star's second album.     HUMAN STORY (Stet) (featuring Mick Pyro) - Intro reminds me a little of INXS backing and Michael Hutchence vocals or maybe Matt Johnson's The The.  A kind of funky Rock opening merges into an Electronic Punk style with interspersed effects.  Another song breaking a few genre boundaries.  A little 60s/70s Progressive and Classic Rock, with late 70s, early 80s New Wave Electonica.  It shouldn't work but i

AVRIL LAVIGNE - "LET GO" 2002

Image
AVRIL LAVIGNE "LET GO" 2002 LOSING GRIP - The opening track is a Grunge Rock track that is a stormer and reminds me a little of Alanis Morrissette in places.  Great introduction to Avril's debut album. COMPLICATED - The debut single and the song that got me interested in the lady's music.  A top track with its Pop Rock appeal and also its a little Alternative with a hint of Country.  A great crossover song. SK8ER BOY - Perfect Pop Punk, another gem and a hit single.  The chug-a-chug guitars and pumping drums, sing-a-long chorus and great hooks make this a classic. I'M WITH YOU -  A simply gorgeous Rock Power ballad.  Avril proves she can sing the emotive songs just as well as she can rock out.  Brilliant song. MOBILE - Starts off with a Blues/Folk feel but then launches into a funky Rock chorus.  Another one of my favourites. UNWANTED - Another possible Alanis Morrissette inspired track.  An angry, powerful vocal amidst an Alternati

BRITNEY SPEARS - "...BABY ONE MORE TIME" 1999

Image
BRITNEY SPEARS "...BABY ONE MORE TIME" 1999 ... BABY ONE MORE TIME - The breakthrough song for Britney opens this hits laden debut album.  It was a new style Pop at the time, a kind of robotic sounding stop-start with an infectious melody and chorus.  Britney led the way for a new kind of female Pop.  This was undoubtedly helped by the "sexy schoolgirl" video that instantly made all the males of the world sit up and take note.  Girls wanted to be her and boys wanted to date her.  New kid on the block makes good a song that TLC could have recorded.   (YOU DRIVE ME) CRAZY - Another Pop gem with a hint of rockin' guitar in the background.  Its punchy and quirky and has a big beat, much like the boy bands in the early 90s when they wanted to sound big and tough and not bubblegum Pop. SOMETIMES - A favourite of mine because it shows the insecurity and little girl emotions hidden behind the tough, brazen, bubbly and confident sound of the previous singles.  This

THE STONE ROSES - "THE STONE ROSES" 1989

Image
THE STONE ROSES "THE STONE ROSES" 1989 I WANNA BE ADORED - A Gothic style anthemic mid tempo track opens the album, setting the eerie but mysterious tone for the band's much anticipated debut album.  Almost Progressive Rock at times with singer Ian Brown's deadpan vocals carrying the minimalist lyrics with only spasmodic changes in tone.  It's a great tune and a solid base for what was to come.  SHE BANGS THE DRUMS - A more uptempo 60s infuenced Rock with a great chorus and elements of Pop and Psychedelia, similar to The Monkees' more mature tracks.  Its catchy, its memorable and its a class song.   WATERFALL - One of my favourites by the band.  Arena "wall of sound" echoed mid tempo guitar based track.  Listening to this in headphones is an experience.  This track hints at early 70s Progressive and Psychedelic Rock and has a nice laid back, chilled out vibe.  Another top song.     DON'T STOP - Pure Psychedelic Rock track, with the swirling m

ROXETTE - "LOOK SHARP!" 1988

Image
ROXETTE "LOOK SHARP!" 1988 THE LOOK - The opening track of the album and the first big international hit for Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson.  It was also the first song that got me hooked into Roxette's brand of music with the irresistibly catchy melodies and chrouses.  This was a slice of Swedish brilliance, with Per taking on lead vocals on a funky Pop Rock tune that sticks in the memory.  Sheer class.     DRESSED FOR SUCCESS - A slightly slower and less funky, typically 80s New Wave Pop.  Marie takes lead vocals and her extraordinary range carries this to new heights.  A booming chorus from her steals the show and makes this a grower, if not in the class of "The Look". SLEEPING SINGLE - Almost Electro Pop track, with snippets of saxophone and funky guitar with Marie singlehandedly carrying a lesser track to an engaging, higher momentum.  Its cool and laid back, good but not a masterpiece. PAINT - Love this track, a little Disco Pop merged with 80s New R

DEACON BLUE - "WHEN THE WORLD KNOWS YOUR NAME" 1989

Image
DEACON BLUE "WHEN THE WORLD KNOWS YOUR NAME" 1989 QUEEN OF THE NEW YEAR - Fast tempo Celtic Folk sound, starting with the drums in marching band mode and just building and building to this massive crescendo of a chorus.  A real foot stomper to open the album! WAGES DAY -  This song kept up the pace from the opener with its uptempo beat all the way through the song and and would get your foot tapping and singing the catchy chorus as high and as loud as you can!     REAL GONE KID - The debut single from the album and was a more polished "live" band sound from the previous debut album's tracks from "Raintown".  It has a real Soul feel, which dives into a pulsating chorus and hit the senses as something memorable.       LOVE AND REGRET - A much slower track than previous 3 tracks.  It reminded me a little of Heart, it is essentially a Rock ballad, soft vocals from Ricky Ross and soft harmonies from Lorraine McIntosh ma

ANTHONY J. QUINN - "THE WORDS AND MUSIC OF..." 2016

Image
ANTHONY J. QUINN "THE WORDS AND MUSIC OF..." 2016 FOREIGN PART OF THE TOWN - Nice, gentle lilting album opener akin to Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers with a 60s Folk feel.  A little sing along chorus unites well with the sweet melodies. ALABAMA SHOE-SHINE BOY - An upbeat track that has elements of Folk, Skiffle and Pop music othe sixties.  Anthony is giving us his best Lonnie Donegan/Gene Pitney vocalised hybrid which makes the track ultimately unusual and engaging.  The song is about Jesse Owens, who won 3 Gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games, so in 2016 with the games in Rio, this is very apt! OLD HAT'S RETURN - Half spoken, half sung song which shows the writer's humour and that he isn't taking himself too seriously.  Its a fun, whimsical little ditty.  TOXTETH GIRL - One of my favourites, a romantic homage to the Toxteth Girl in question.  Really sweet, soft ballad that brings a smile to the listener's face.    BLINDED BY HER BEAUTY - This is half

SEASON OF GHOSTS - "A LEAP OF FAITH" 2018

Image
SEASON OF GHOSTS "A LEAP OF FAITH" 2018   THE ROAD SO FAR - This second album by the band kicks off with a beautiful, gentle Asian styled melodic and relaxing orchestral piece lasting just over 2 minutes.     A PLACE TO CALL HOME   - Electro Rock intro and singer Sophia Aslanides (formerly of Japanese metal band Blood Stain Child) gives a powerful, intens Rock vocal fronting a thumping drumbeat and deep and heavy guitars.  Awesome track.    ASTERO(ID) - Atmospheric, big, loud Metal track with Sophia carrying the melody with the vocal.  Its brash arena style sound and frenetic rhythmic tempo are paired with some screeching guitar riffs.  Another gem. LISTEN - Sounding like a more metallic Avril Lavigne and hints of Amy Lee of Evanescence this is a straight up Rock track.  Its pace is relentless but if you listen in the headphones you can all the layers behind the pounding beat.   A LEAP OF FAITH - This track is like a merging of Pop Rock, New Wave and Classic Rock.  One

WHITE DENIM - "WORLD AS A WAITING ROOM" 2020

Image
WHITE DENIM “WORLD AS A WAITING ROOM” 2020   I DON'T UNDERSTAND ROCK AND ROLL - An album planned for release in 30 days during lockdown in the band's hometown of Austin, Texas.  The album was completed in a week and kicks off with this fast paced, late 70s, early 80s New Wave Rock track.  Its catchy rhythm and chorus is similar to that of The Cars.  Great start.  Vocalist James Petralli sings "So your summer came early, all the streets are empty" summing up the world's predicament. MATTER OF MATTER - This track is a mix of everything, there are nods to 90s Brit Pop, early 70s Classic Rock and New Wave.  Another uptempo number which sounds like an experimental jam but it works! Cool song. WORK - A rooster call introduces this track, probably the wake up call for work.  It is just over 6 minutes and is an epic Punk Rock style reminding me of Iggy Pop and the Stooges.  Its got a great groove, toe tappingly delightful.  The tempo is similar to Iggy's "R

STEREOPHONICS - "JUST ENOUGH EDUCATION TO PERFORM" 2001

Image
STEREOPHONICS "JUST ENOUGH EDUCATION TO PERFORM" 2001   VEGAS TWO TIMES - The opening track to the band's third album and the set that got me hooked on this great band, seeking out their back catalogue.  This is a mellow slight introduction crashing into Heavy Rock meeting Blues elements.  An absolute stormer to kick off a great album. LYING IN THE SUN - A melancholic, wistful Acoustic Rock track showcasing singer Kelly Jones' throaty, emotive vocal.  Everything is wonderful about this, the beautiful guitar and full of hope and longing.  Nice. MR WRITER - An Britpop Rock vibe for this track.  This is the track that contains the title of the album and reached number 5 in the UK chart.  Its sometimes compared to Oasis' songs but I think that's detrimental to this fine band.  Kelly is a much better songwriter and the band make Oasis look like One Direction in talent stakes.  A great song and very eeerie video!   STEP ON MY OLD SIZE NINES - A really nice, l

HEART - "HEART" 1985

Image
HEART "HEART"   1985     IF LOOKS COULD KILL - The album opener, and a typical 80s hard rocker, lots of searing guitars and a pumping beat, with a catchy killer chorus and this is a gem.  Classic Heart. WHAT ABOUT LOVE - Originally recorded by Canadian band Toronto, this is the best known version.  An anthemic orchestral-like Rock ballad, Ann Wilson's booming and awesome vocals bring this one to life, great song. NEVER - A bright Pop Rock number with a backdrop positive message about being uplifted after being discouraged by love.  A lovely song that again is lifted by Ann's superb emotive vocals.  Keyboards and guitars mix that was popular in radio friendly Rock music at the time. THESE DREAMS - Nancy Wilson (apparently full of a cold, hence creating rasping vocals) took charge of this song from Ann.  A simply beautiful and sweet Rock ballad, Heart's biggest hit of this fine album.      THE WOLF - This is going back to e

THE FAR NORTH - "SONGS FOR GENTLE SOULS" 2020

Image
THE FAR NORTH "SONGS FOR GENTLE SOULS" 2020 RUNAWAY - The debut album by former The Fireflys' members, singer-songwriter and guitarist Lee Wylding and drummer Andie Packer begins with a gem.  This opener reminds me of a classic Bon Jovi or Def Leppard track that's part of an Acoustic set.  I always loved that change of style with the orchestral sounds lifting their famous songs.  Lee gives a brilliant, emotive Rock vocal that merges with the delightful melancholic melody. THIS HOUSE IS OURS - The tempo turns up a gear for this, with an Irish Folk style rhythm.  An instant foot tapper and  catchy chorus lifts this debut single.  Imagine a Pirate crew having a sing-a-long chugging some Rum with you clapping and stomping the deck!.  Awesome.     BRANCHES - A favourite of mine from The Fireflys' back catalogue gets a new re-working here.  This version emits even more emotion than the original.  There is a lovely Country twang as the track is slowed down a touch to

SHAKESPEAR'S SISTER - "SACRED HEART" 1989

Image
SHAKESPEAR'S SISTE R "SACRED HEART" 1989 HEROINE - The opening track to this debut album by the duo of ex-Bananarama singer Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit is an experimental masterpiece.  The driving beat carries a Synth Rock track akin to INXS, while the vocals are a hybrid of Punk and Goth.  It is dark but poppy, eerie but quirky and a storming introduction to the band.  Any Bananarama fans hoping for cute Pop songs were in for a shock. RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP - This track slows down the tempo a little, its a beautiful slice of Electro Pop.  Gorgeous harmonies and melody and a memorable chorus. It is also a little Dream Pop in style.  Nice. DIRTY MIND - A fast based mostly drum and bass dance track.  Sexy, breathy vocals and some slight funky Prince "Kiss" like guitars don't really carry it for me, not a favourite of mine. I am sure the kids in the clubs loved it but after the first two glorious compositions this is a disappointment. SACRED HEART - Th
