KELLI ALI - "TIGERMOUTH" 2003

Image
KELLI ALI   "TIGERMOUTH" 2003 INFERNO HIGH LOVE - Formerly lead singer of The Sneaker Pimps, Kelli's debut album opens with this pulsating high tempo Electro track.  Think of Madonna, add a few background searing guitars and an Alternative Rock style and this is it.  Great opener!   TEARDROP HITTIN' THE GROUND - Another Electro Rock styled track, and again a catchy chorus.  It is basically Trip Hop rocked up to the hilt! Superb song. KEEP ON DREAMING -  Mesmerising, atmospheric Trip Hop that reminds the listener of Kelli's previous band and the classic album, "Becoming X". ANGEL IN L.A. - A nice enough slow Electonic Pop ballad but its not as punchy and attention grabbing as the first three tracks. HERE COMES THE SUMMER - This is a beautifully sung New Wave Pop ballad with a little Electronica and Trip Hop.  One of my favourites, melodious and Kelli's vocals are sweet. FELLOW MAN - Another hint to The Sneaker Pimps' style, atmospheric, mid t

BRYAN ADAMS - "BRYAN ADAMS" 1980

Image
BRYAN ADAMS "BRYAN ADAMS" 1980   HIDIN' FROM LOVE - Bryan Adams' debut album opens with this catchy Pop Rock track that is more Pop than Rock.  Similar to most of the early 80s fare.  Good opener though.  This debut single did not chart here in the UK.  Bryan's first real single in 1978 "Let Me Take You Dancing" is not inculded here. WIN SOME LOSE SOME - A great track, a mix of Classic Rock with an almost funky Blues feel. we don't hear the big rocky guitars yet as was key to his later material's success.  This has some upfront keyboards giving it a typical 70s Rock style. WAIT AND SEE - This is a basic kind of rocky Pop track that, despite some nice guitar work doesn't really grab you. GIVE ME YOUR LOVE - Bryan's second single from this set and it's the first ballad.  It is an easy going, nice Pop Rock song that is very soulful and emotional.  Normally I rate Bryan as doing the best rocky numbers than ballads but this nice.    WA

ADAM ANT - "ADAM ANT IS THE BLUEBLACK HUSSAR IN MARRYING THE GUNNER'S DAUGHTER" 2013

Image
ADAM ANT "ADAM ANT IS THE BLUEBLACK HUSSAR IN MARRYING THE GUNNER'S DAUGHTER" 2013 COOL ZOMBIE - As with the album this only single from the album was self-promoted and released.  The album teased at being the "Kings of the Wild Frontier" Adam back from the dead, the "marrying..etc" in the title is an old naval term for a punishment of flogging, seemingly how music stars are treated today! This first track is similar to the "Kings.." era, but I am still disappointed he went "back", as Adam was the only star in the 80s who looked forward and moved on, re-creating...oh well.  This was a decent tune with its half bluesy feel. STAY IN THE GAME - This is an eerie, dark track in the style of Iggy Pop and like the majority of this album seem to go back to the early Punk days of the Ants of the "Dirk Wears White Sox" era and late 70s. MARRYING THE GUNNER'S DAUGHTER - This is a merging of some dirty Blues with Rock 'N

GARBAGE - "GARBAGE" 1995

Image
GARBAGE   "GARBAGE" 1995 SUPERVIXEN - Awesome opener to the album, singer Shirley Manson delivers a languid, moody, angry vocal over a high octane crash of searing guitars backdrop.  Garbage liked to push boundaries of genres and this is no exception.  Almost Punk in attitude and Grunge in style. Only released as a promotional single but a class track. QUEER - The band's first big hit in the UK reaching number 13.  This track is a gem and another mix of styles.  There is the Trip Hop vibe of Morcheeba, the Grunge Rock of Nirvana and also the angst and Alternative Pop akin to Alanis Morissette and Alisha's Attic.  Simply brilliant. ONLY HAPPY WHEN IT RAINS - The single that got Garbage noticed in the UK reaching the Top 30 for the first time peaking at number 29.  A great slice of Alternative/Electronic Rock, more sing-a-long than the previous tracks it has become a favourite of Garbage fans and many artists have covered the song.  One of my favourite tracks of the

RADIO DRIVE - "SHE COLORS MY WORLD" 2018

Image
RADIO DRIVE "SHE COLORS MY WORLD" 2018     HORIZON - The first track of the album gives you a bright start to your listening pleasure.  A strong 80s vibe is captured here, in the style of a U2/Simple Minds hybrid while encompassing a great Electronic Rock sound.  It's a mid tempo track but its one of those songs that would be awesome in a huge arena, anthemic Rock at its best. A NEW START - Almost Psychedelic with a little Progressive Rock, this track gives us guitars in a medieval stye.  The ambience of the echoes and effects give a real 70s feel.  As with most of Kevin's songs this has a surprising diversion, at around 2 minutes 40 there is a small instrumental interlude has a distinctive Electronic Synth Pop element.  SWEET THING - A light, lilting song in a slow almost Folk Blues style is a very nice, relaxing listen.  At 1 minute 40 comes another surprise as there's a move into early 70s Classic Rock before easing back into

SOPHIE B. HAWKINS - "TONGUES AND TAILS" 1992

Image
SOPHIE B. HAWKINS "TONGUES AND TAILS"   1992     DAMN I WISH I WAS YOUR LOVER - The massive hit and Sophie's break out song.  Starts off like a usual Pop song akin to Madonna (at the time) and Natalie Imbruglia but then the drums kick in and it turns into a rocker.  Class song.     CALIFORNIA HERE I COME - A slow tempo ballad with the occasional big vocals, a dreamy song for the most part, laid back and cool similar to Sheryl Crow's half Rock, half Pop style. MYSTERIES WE UNDERSTAND - Funky Pop with different genres incorporated into the song.  Uptempo backing and hints of Rock and Soul and a kind of Rap in between.  Lots going on, listen in headphones and try to pick out all the complex experimental arrangements. SAVIOUR CHILD - A jazzy Pop song that is engaging for the most part but gets a little annoyingly repetitive. CARRY ME - A very strange track, experimental, involves orgasmic moans, strange "loving mother"

VIRGINIA HAZE - "GENUINE" 2006

Image
VIRGINIA HAZE "GENUINE"   2006   BREAKABLE - Great foot stomper to open the album, complete with catchy chorus and an early 80s Heart style.  Almost a Pat Benatar/Joan Jett hybrid, this is uptempo Classic Rock at its best. GENUINE - A sombre beginning to this track and an almost Cher-like vocal akin to the American star's late 80s excursion into Rock territory.  More classic Heart hints make this a really beautiful song from start to finish. WHAT'S GOIN' ON - Blues Rock, somehow reminding me of Free and Lynyrd Skynyrd and those style of bands from the mid 70s era.  A subtle hint of Fleetwood Mac's early years is also present. THE COMING OF THE FAIRIES - Love this track as a fan of The Bangles, reminiscent of the girls' debut album "All Over The Place".  A raw, Psychedelic hippie Rock track that has a great feel good vibe. GOSPEL SINGERS - Soft, gentle ballad as Virginia plays the Chanteuse in a smoky bar.  A littl

PRINCE - "CONTROVERSY" 1981

Image
PRINCE  "CONTROVERSY" 1981 CONTROVERSY - Prince's 4th album is said to have bridged the gap from the sexual energy of "Dirty Mind" to the Funk Rock Dance phenomenon created on "1999".  The album opens with the epic 7 minute Dance title track.  Its pumping funky beat along with delightful keyboard harmonising keeps the energy flowing throughout.  Prince acknowledges the so called "controversies" and pretty much blatantly spells it all out about the pre-conceptions about him "am I black or white, straight or gay?" and also culture in general.  It didn't chart in the UK on release but made number 5 a mere 12 years later! SEXUALITY - Another funky Dance number with Prince declaring that "sexuality is all we ever need".  Of course everybody must dance as well! A great track and glides along nicely with Prince's trademark sexually charged spueals adding cheekiness, eroticism, or whatever the listener takes from it.   D

THE BESSER 3 - "TIME TRAVELS" 2018

Image
THE BESSER 3 "TIME TRAVELS " 2018     WHO'S COUNTING? - The opening track is a kind of march style song with full force.  Very dramatic and mysterious, clever off beat and off tune elements which reminds me of a soundtrack to a movie thriller.  A mix of light piano and heavier, angry chops and the Swing style slow, jagged tempo set us up for a rollercoaster ride of experiments to come. KLEZMATIZED - Uptempo foot tapping track, sounds like a real Jazz jamming session.  Gives the feeling of happiness and fun and the funky bass gives this a real lift.  Really love this track, all musicians give the impression that this was a good time! SWINGTIME OUT - Gentle, bass and piano in this real Swing Jazz chilled out track.  Minimal sounding but very casual and easy on the ears.  I can imagine being in an old style bar late at night with the band playing on stage in the cool, smokey air. STEP FIVE - Romantic and emotive sounding track, again would be a

MADONNA - "TRUE BLUE" 1986

Image
MADONNA   "TRUE BLUE" 1986   PAPA DON'T PREACH - Madonna's third studio album opens with the critically acclaimed track that was her second number 1 in the UK chart.  A positive anthem for young mothers everywhere and stressing the message that women can be strong in adversity.  This strong feminine image was pioneering to women throughout the 80s and 90s.  A great mid tempo orchestrated Pop ballad.  Classic. OPEN YOUR HEART - A favourite track of mine, I love the throbbing uptempo clattering of drums.  A great anthemic chorus and big vocals from Madonna. reaching number 4 on the UK chart, the top ten hits kept coming.  This had a hint of Motown and R 'n B in there too.  One of Madonna's best.   WHITE HEAT - This is a mid to fast paced Synth Pop with hints of Rock guitar sounds.  Sampling the film White Heat's dialogue and gunshots its a decent song.  Not one of my favourites but its got a good tempo but is a little too repetitive for me.  As with all g

CYNDI LAUPER - "SHE'S SO UNUSUAL" 1983

Image
CYNDI LAUPER "SHE'S SO UNUSUAL" 1983     MONEY CHANGES EVERYTHING - The opening track of Cyndi's debut album was a cover of The Brains'  1980 underground hit.  New Wave Rock Pop, Cyndi explores her vocal range to the hilt with some ear piercing, amazing high notes, which critics' adored later on her career.  Great uptempo start to a great album. GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN - One of Cyndi's signature tunes and became a feminist anthem and a hit all over the globe.  Perfect 80s Pop, with elements of Dance and Rock, and an unbelievably catchy sing along chorus.  One of the best and most memorable songs of the 80s decade. WHEN YOU WERE MINE - As a Prince fan I recognised this cover version on first listen.  A brilliant 80s Synthpop style track where she kept all of the he/him/his pronouns in the lyrics.  A mid tempo ballad that stands on its own and gives Cyndi's album a more mature track amid the hits.   TIME AFTER TIME

THE FIREFLYS - "THE ILLUMINATION OF EVERYTHING" 2016

Image
THE FIREFLYS "THE ILLUMINATION OF EVERYTHING" 2016 ILLUMINATION - Rip-roaring opening of frenzied heavy guitars before launching into classic Fireflys territory, the melodious, incredibly catchy chorus! At 2 minutes 12 seconds we get an atmospheric electronic/guitar break, almost psychedelic before heading back to an epic finish. RELEASE/REPEAT - This light Folk Rock track is already a fan favourite before the album launch due to its prior single outing. One of those tracks you just need to keep playing, a first namer on any Flys hit team sheet! BRANCHES - This song was played to death in our house, and to our friends! A beautifully crafted song, melancholic and light, the guitars remind me of Prince's Purple Rain solo, it sings of sadness and hope. Sheer class, I called it a lilting mixed masterpiece in a first review, I wasn't wrong.   ANGEL OF THE NORTH - A chilled and relaxing number, a little 70s Prog Rock, a little 90s Stone

SUPPORT LESBIENS - "REGENERATION" 2001

Image
SUPPORT LESBIENS "REGENERATION" 2001     BET MY SOUL -The song that got me hooked, it just sounded so unusual.  An almost mostly Folk Acoustic Pop with a manic Rock ending.       FISHERMAN'S FRIEND - Full of Classic Rock riffs with a slight Blues Country hint.  Great "as live" sound production.     BUBBLEBROWN - A very bluesy track with moments of Country twang throughout and some excellent atmospheric Classic Rock guitars. PLEASE LOOK AT ME -  This brings the tempo down a little, a really lovely almost Acoustic Rock ballad with lots of emotion. HER EYES -  A Pop Rock track that isn't one of my favourites, it kind of meanders along a little too much, although it has some tender moments. LET'S JUST SING - An almost Jazz Blues hybrid complete with "do do do do" singalong vocals.  The guitars are very summery and it gives off a good feeling vibe.  Let's just sing!   TEAR BUT NOT TORN - This s

SPANDAU BALLET - "JOURNEYS TO GLORY" 1981

Image
SPANDAU BALLET "JOURNEYS TO GLORY" 1981 TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT - The opening track and debut single was the epitomy of the New Romantic Pop phenomenon that took over the first couple of years in the 80s.  The Synth New Wave sound, medieval like percussion and Tony Hadley's big booming vocal are just fantastic. REFORMATION - An almost repetitive, rhyming lyric over a typically 80s Electronic Synth Pop backing.  Again there is a dark, almost eerie medieval sound running through the track.  Catchy in a strange way, but great track. MANDOLIN - A little more anthemic and bigger sound to the previous tracks and with a funky bassline that hits the mark.  A mix of Ultravox pomp and Soft Cell vocals.  Not a single but I love this track. MUSCLEBOUND - A New Wave track, a slow tempo backing track with Tony giving it his all to lifet it to new heights, then the annoyingly catchy chanted chorus kicks in and you can't help but sing along. AGE OF BLOWS

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - "CALIFORNICATION" 1999

Image
RED HOT CHILI PEPPER S "CALIFORNICATION"   1999     AROUND THE WORLD - A frenetic start to the album with the usual Rap Funk Rock as is the Chilis well known style.  With the searing guitar riffs, pumping percussion and Anthony Kiedis' variety of vocal styles this is the perfect beginning. PARALLEL UNIVERSE - With its unusual Europop throbbing Electro beat merging into the blasting Hard Rock chorus.  Clever, experimental and top stuff. SCAR TISSUE - One of my favourite Chili's tracks.  A laid back almost Acoustic Blues Rock track with a little Folk style vocals.  Awesome anthemic guitars.     OTHERSIDE - A classy Alternative Rock track, almost Grunge style of the 90s.  This apparently deals with addicts' problems with their previous addictions.  A dark meaning but a great song. GET ON TOP - Classic Chili Peppers simialr to "Give It Away", hard Funk Rock with Rap interludes and exquisite funky bass from Flea.

ALISHA'S ATTIC - "ALISHA RULES THE WORLD" 1996

Image
ALISHA'S ATTIC "ALISHA RULES THE WORLD" 1996     IRRESISTIBLE U ARE - Album opener, a sweet almost lullaby short song, gorgeous harmonies and sweet vocals with an Eastern feel and childlike kaleidoscope backing. INTENSE - The most angry and most Rock song on the album, very Alanis Morissette, would not be out of place on Alanis' own "Jagged Little Pill".  Great song. I AM, I FEEL - This was the track that got me hooked, as a fan of Wendy and Lisa (part of Prince's Revolution band), this track did remind me of their beautiful harmonies and melodies and the vocals had a hint of Alanis Morissette's croaky angry vocals, a class song.     INDESTRUCTIBLE - A mesh of Spice Girls and Sneaker Pimps with Kelli Ali, ambient sounds and almost psychedelic backing.     ALISHA RULES THE WORLD -  This title track had elements of Motown, pure Pop and was a little like The Bangles, great song. WHITE ROOM - 70s Psychedelic tr
