ABBA - THE ALBUMS 1973 - 2021

Image
"RING RING" 1973 RING RING - The title track is one of the earlier memorable songs from the Abba catalogue.  A perfect slice of Europop which gave Abba their breakthrough in several European countries at the start of their career.  A simple mid tempo musical backing with one of those classic, memorable, catchy choruses for which the band became famous, made this a great start of this Pop phenomenon.     ANOTHER TOWN, ANOTHER TRAIN - A melancholic, gentle Folk Pop ballad.  Laid back, melodic, easy listening track that lilts along nicely.  Bjorn Ulvaeus takes lead vocals with the usual singing ladies, Agentha Faltskog and Anni-frid Lyngstad backing up on the simplistic chorus. DISILLUSION - The only Abba released song to have a songwriting credit to Agnetha.  She takes lead vocals too on this rather beautiful Pop ballad.  A really nice song giving Agnetha full rein to guide it with her vocals. PEOPLE NEED LOVE - A Folk Pop track with a Euro influence.  The debut single when

A-HA - THE ALBUMS 1985 - 2022

"HUNTING HIGH AND LOW" 1985 TAKE ON ME - The band's debut album opens with the classic 80s track and unmistakeable Synth Pop intro.  Loved this song instantly on first listen and was then hooked on A-ha and Morten Harket's incredible vocal range.  The track finally charted after a couple of attempts and reached number 2 in the UK charts.  Its accompanying video was groundbreaking using animated and live action scenes sequenced together.  A masterpiece. TRAIN OF THOUGHT - The third UK single release and reached number 8 in the chart and was their third successive top ten hit.  This has a typical Synth Pop fast paced drumbeat with a surprisingly slow tempo vocal by Morten, showing off his complete range in the song.  It grows on you after a couple of listens. HUNTING HIGH AND LOW - A beautiful slow minimal ballad reaching an anthemic, operatic crescendo to finish.  Great emotionally charged vocals and a captivating backing. THE BLUE SKY - At just over two and a half

JEFF MCCALL - THE ALBUMS 2017 - 2020

"NIGHT LIFE" 2017 NIGHT LIFE -  This opening track reminds me of Heaven 17 with a hint of Krafwerk's electronic vocal backing on the chorus.  Bright and breezy with a great vocal, a pumping electronic beat and catchy chorus.  Sets you up nicely for the nostalgic glimpse into your 80s past that is to come.     HAVEN'T I TRIED - Starts with a person walking and whistling before the footsteps change into a throbbing electrobeat, synths and handclap sounds.  The verses are clearly Erasure-like but the chorus somehow changes into Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys! Great song, the chorus is sing-a-long catchy and the vocals and composition are perfect Electro Pop. WHEN YOU FALL - A powerful and emotive Electro Rock ballad with an eerie atmospheric style.  As a big fan of Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet it reminds me a little of their very early albums.  The chorus is akin to David Sylvian of Japan, with that low, almost monotone dark vocal

ANNA MELINE - "I COULDN'T STAY" 2015

ANNA MELINE "I COULDN'T STAY" 2015 I COULDN'T STAY - This debut album by Swedish singer-songwriter Anna Meline is a mixed bag of a few genres showing this young lady's raw creative talent.  This is where it began before the latest accomplished music of songs like "Pictures And Words" in 2019.  The opening title track is a pumping Electronic Europop track backing up Anna's anguished Rock like vocal. WHAT FOR - Track 2 is a beautiful, emotional Pop ballad.  Big vocals front a powerful melancholic melody.  Simply great Pop, a little Abba, a little Roxette and a little Berlin.  Nice. STANDING - This is a kind of New Wave Rock Pop track, similar in vein to early The Cars tracks.  Electronic but also with a rocky beat. Its another cool track for Miss Meline.     THERE FOR YOU - This is pure 80s Synth Pop, reminds me of early Erasure.  It is simple but catchy and yet another genre for Anna to experiment with.  This set is a brave debut for a fresh new ta
