"WANDERING SOUL"
2018
FOLLOWER - The opening track sounds like a ZZ Top/90s Grunge hybrid. Awesome Blues Rock guitars and drums backing with vocalist Juliette Tworsey's snarling vocals akin to someone like PJ Harvey make this a stomping intro!
SINNER - Classic 70s style Rock with slight hints of Blues and Country and also Progressive Rock. A bit of everything make this a great track.
WINE, WATER AND BREAD - One of my favourites by the band, a Blues Rock slow tempo tune with hints of 60s and 70s Psychedelic leanings. Superb track.
WANDERING SOUL - The title track reminds me a little of Paloma Faith, an almost funky Jazz/Blues style midtempo jam that emphasises the creativity of the band to sample many genres.
THE RIVER - Early 70s Progressive Rock takes centre stage here with hints of hippie style Psychedelia effects and echoes. Experimental and is almost like early Heart or Fleetwodd Mac.
FOOL LIKE ME - A raw, pure track that has a little Punk edge to it with that "live" clear guitar strumming. Every track here links to many forms and genres, it shows how accomplished this band is to try their hand at anything.
SHALLOW WATER - Atmospheric dark Classic Rock gem. Eerie but enchanting vocals lift his to a brilliant song.
FURTHER FROM JUNE - Epic 6 minute almost medieval sounding Folk Rock track. Immense.
USED TO BE - Classic Rock/Glam Rock hybrid with hints to Queen of the Stone Age and Glam of the 70s such as T-Rex and The Sweet. Another of my favourites.
FOR THE LOVE - A melancholic Pop Rock ballad with a memorable chorus. Juliette's vocals are fantastic bringing the emotion of this track.
STRANGE DAYS - Another New Wave/Punk track that reminds me of The Pretenders with Juliette giving a nod maybe to Chrissie Hynde. Class.
REFUGEE - Again a hint to ZZ Top with some great Country/Blues Rock guitar backing and some moody vocals at the fore.
THE WIND GOES BY - Juliette channels her inner chanteuse here to finish the album. For some reason it reminds me of a Sophie B.Hawkins track from her "Tongues And Tails" album. It is atmospheric, eerie, emotive and quirky all at the same time. Great end to a top album!
"NO RETURN"
2022
NO RETURN - The title track opens this album with a storming introduction. With elements of Progressive and Classic Rock interspersed with a variety of vocals from lead singer Juliette Tworsey, this is a mega anthemic rocker.
TRAIL THAT NEVER ENDS (CELESTIAL TRAVELER) - A haunting vocal fronts a typical 70s Progressive Rock style with an Eastern flavour. At the 3 and a half minute mark the song ends with a crescendo of crashing Classic Rock drums and guitars remind me a little of Rush. Another gem.
MOMENT OF JOY - Unusually kicking off with a slight Jazz feel the track soon moves into cool Blues and Rock 'n Roll territory. It ends with a little 60s Psychedelia!
CHANGE - This is an arena sized ballad, Firebug style. Powerful vocals again from Juliette over a Classic 80s Rock vibe, reminscent of Heart. A favourite of mine.
ONLY THE LUCKY - A minimal Acoustic track with a style that is similar to The Animals' "House of the Rising Sun". Its an emotionally sung, really lovely ballad.
DOWN - Another genre is squeezed out of the Firebug repertoire proving they are no one trick ponies. A brilliant straight up Blues slow rocker.
ST. ELMO'S FIRE- Mostly instrumental, this song finishes a really good album. This is yet another genre attempted and it succeeds. A kind of Dream Pop this time.
"MADONNA" 1983 LUCKY STAR - The opening track is a Disco Pop song, which became her trademark for this debut album before moving into more Pop areas in her next few albums. Its mid tempo beats and twangy guitars and elctro synths made this an accessible staple to radio airplay connecting to a variety of listeners. Classic Madonna. BORDERLINE - A change of direction after the first upbeat song, this is a kind of Pop ballad set to a Disco track. Some lovely harmonies and became her first top ten hit in the USA. A Reggie Lucas written composition and it gave Madonna chance to explore her vocals and conveying emotion in her songs. One of my favourites. BURNING UP - One of my top songs by Madonna. Similar to the later "Gambler". It is a fast paced Disco beat laden track with a rockier twist with random guitar riffs. A real gem. I KNOW IT - This track is keyboard led and has a nice 60s Pop/Rock N' Roll vibe akin to the later "True Blue". A
"DURAN DURAN" 1981 GIRLS ON FILM - This debut album by the band opens with this brilliant New Wave track. Their breakthrough single in the UK chart reaching number 5. Its cheeky and somewhat sarcastic lyrics about the glamour and glitz of the modelling industry are backed by an irresistible pumping rhythm and keyboard and guitar accompanient. Its just a classic Duran Duran song and a classic 80s song as well. Top opener. PLANET EARTH - The debut single only reached number 12 in the UK chart. This is more Synth Pop Disco than the previous track. Again with the pumping rhythm but more experimental than "Girls On Film" and the chorus is not as catchy but still engaging to be a great song. ANYONE OUT THERE - This is one of my favourite Duran Duran tracks, it has a more rockier guitar backing. Also a funky bass appears with echoed vocals in one segment. This is more Pop Rock and as the band proved with their album tracks in the future, this was more than ju
"PURPLE RAIN" "1984" LET'S GO CRAZY - The abum opens with the famous church organ sounding out with a little Prince-like "sermon" before firing up a blistering funky Rock anthem that is one of my favourite songs by the man. The single was the 2nd single release from the album and along with its B-side "Take Me With U" hit number 7 in the UK chart. If previous releases wan't enough proof this track shows Prince the brilliant guitarist. TAKE ME WITH U - As previously stated this was a double A-side of "Let's Go Crazy" which radio sometimes played as an alternative. Sung as a duet with Apollonia Kotero (the female lead in the "Purple Rain" movie) with co-vocals by Jill Jones and Lisa Coleman. A melodic easy going romantic track with strings bringing down the pace a bit after the opening track. THE BEAUTIFUL ONES - One of Prince's most loved sexy, lustful, emotionally charged romantic ballads. Altho
