THE FIREFLYS - 2016 - 2019 (2 ALBUMS)

"THE ILLUMINATION OF EVERYTHING"

2016

ILLUMINATION - Rip-roaring opening of frenzied heavy guitars before launching into classic Fireflys territory, the melodious, incredibly catchy chorus! At 2 minutes 12 seconds we get an atmospheric electronic/guitar break, almost psychedelic before heading back to an epic finish.

RELEASE/REPEAT - This light Folk Rock track is already a fan favourite before the album launch due to its prior single outing. One of those tracks you just need to keep playing, a first namer on any Flys hit team sheet!

BRANCHES - This song was played to death in our house, and to our friends! A beautifully crafted song, melancholic and light, the guitars remind me of Prince's Purple Rain solo, it sings of sadness and hope. Sheer class, I called it a lilting mixed masterpiece in a first review, I wasn't wrong.

ANGEL OF THE NORTH - A chilled and relaxing number, a little 70s Prog Rock, a little 90s Stone Roses. After a hard day's work you put this on with your favourite beverage and sit a while...Flys style....

BE ALONE
- A slow burner, took me a few listens to appreciate this track. A cinematic, dramatic intro throws you a bit at first but then the light Pop Rock track kicks in and the lyrics are really lovely, nobody wants to be alone, right?

WHEN WE WERE YOUNG - One of the tracks debuted at the awesome Storytellers gig at The Brindley last year. Loved it from that moment, it has the same gorgeous feelings of hope and positivity that is the Flys' calling card.

RIVER SONG
- Really love this track, Jon Bon Jovi and the boys would be proud of this, anthemic 80s Rock at its best. Would be great in a huge arena. It has that fast paced chugga chugga guitars that make you wanna play air guitar, man!

TIDES - Reminds me of a little Chili Peppers or Guns N' Roses' Patience. Has that cool "live" sound and is a pure and very lovely Flys ballad.

SEVER - The second previewed taster track at The Brindley "Storytellers" gig. All I can say is it is simply brilliant, heartfelt lyrics with a little hint of a Country/Folk hybrid backing. Class.

TIME DID THIS TO US - This reminds me a little of R.E.M, or maybe singer Lee Wylding is channeling his "inner Stipe"! Its a really stunning song and a fitting bundle of nostalgia, given that the Flys have also "changed". Everything is truly illuminated with Fireflys...

 "ONLY US, NORTHERN LIGHTS"

2019

GRACE - Epic opener on this, the band's fifth album which eventually became their last before frontman Lee Wylding formed The Far North.  Its a melodic Pop Rock track with a hint of Country with a breezy outlook.  The last couple of minutes give a really uplifting feel with a chorus of atmospheric "oh oh" and positive mantra repeated.

RUNAWAY - Another blockbusting Folk/Americana anthem.  Searing guitars and pounding drums and emotive vocals with a memorable chorus.  Brilliant track.

THIS HOUSE IS OURS - A lovely Country Folk track, a chugging upbeat backing track behind Lee's lilting, soulful vocals.  This is another gem, up there with some of the band's best tracks.

ANNA AGAIN - This has a very 70s Soft Pop Rock vibe, its a another melodic piece of genius from the band.  Proving that no genre is untouchable, this is more poppy than some of their tracks but is beautifully crafted.

JULIANNE - A re-working of the song from the "Embers Of The Autumn" album.  Alittle more fuller in sound than the original and its a great slow driven lazy Rock track.  Gorgeous twinkly guitars towards the end.

RELEASE/REPEAT - Another re-working, this time from the previous album.  A brave move but it works.  The song was an instant hit with fans before "The Illumination of Everything" came out and so this is just a bigger and better and more polished version.  Classy track.

PUSH - Another change of gear here, this Rock track has a very Gothic/Grunge feel with maybe a little Classic and Progressive Rock mixed in! Dark, searing guitars and pumping bass back up Lee's deep vocal touch.

THESE CITIES, THESE COLOURS - A beautiful more minimal Soft Rock ballad.  Soulful and mellow, very nice indeed.  It builds up to a crescendo near the end and then comes down to leave us with a melancholic feeling again

THE SAILOR & THE SEA - Awesome uplifting Rock track, The Fireflys have an enviable talent for churning out incredible melodies and creating an emotion within.  Another favourite of mine.

MY HEART (LIVE) - A really lovely heartfelt and soulful Acoustic ballad to finish of a fine album.  The band ended too soon in my opinion but all good things must come to an end sometime.  Thy finish on a high.
